That's all for now folks, I'm off on holiday tomorrow and need to mop the floor before I go. Keep an eye out next week though as I will still be posting (through my telepathic powers, ahem , through the power of auto post!) I hope you all have a great time and don't miss me too much!

A Sad Day

I saw something yesterday that upset both me and t'other half quite a bit. There is a house on the street opposite us where Roy and dog lived. Roy is a man in his late 80s and in the last year has been in and out of the hospital a few times due to ill health. That has not stopped him from when well shuffling up and down the street in a vest walking his dog. Neither walk fast. Recently though he has been moved to a council care home as he is not stable enough to be home alone.

It also seems that he will not be coming back. I woke yesterday (I'd been given a lie in) to a skip being dropped off in our street. Normally this is not frightening but when I got dressed I realised what was happening. They were cleaning the house out, from top to bottom. It upset me that this was being done not by family members but by the council. There is a family member who lives near by, and apparently she did turn up take things out of house and then leave. As I went across, yesterday evening his grandson's wife had turned up to help with things. She was actually helping to move things and not just there to take.

I find it sad, that a man who is still alive can be put through this. He is in a home, granted and his house is a council house but to have your house ripped apart from top to bottom, I cannot find the words to describe how I felt. Now, as I look out of the window, I can still see bits of furnishings in his garden, things that once held memories now thrown away.

I hope that when old age finds me, that it finds me in good health with a loving family.

BNM

To Roy, we know that you are still around and we will not forget you. But I will miss our chats at midnight in the cold while you walked the dog.

6 Word Stories

I follow a few American and Canadian blogs and the new one that I have recently found is the fantastic blog of BloggingDangerously, a lying, no good, two-timing, blogging wife and mother who is cheating on her other blog with the INTERNET.That is her own description. She has a no holes barred approach to blogging and blogs about everything including her sex life.

And so as an homage to her, I am borrowing the 6 word stories. An assignment for all of us, something to do, something to keep our brains from not disappearing with the heat of the sun....

And here's mine:

Two more sleeps, off we go!

Just join in below if you feel like it!

Listography - 5 things you've learnt from your parents

I'm joining in again on the Listography, that Kate over at Kate takes 5 does. Here are 5 lessons that my children should learn from things I may have learnt from my parents.

  1. Mixing drinks is not a good idea - lesson learnt by watching my mother and my godmother drinking together on summer evenings. To be honest anyone who can drink baileys in the same glass as having red wine in, does in my book need their head reading (but they were both mad!). The morning after one of many nights like this is when my father would spout "Never mix drinks, never mix the barley and the grape!" (lesson I am still to learn)
  2. Chairs have four legs - yes, this is what was spouted constantly in our house when either me or my brother would balance back on the dining room chairs and nearly fall off. Luckily neither of us did and luckily the girls have started to do this yet!
  3. Cooking is fun and you don't always need a recipe - this I learnt from my dad who when we were young and he was made redundant. He then used to watch ready steady cook and then make something from the kitchen cupboards. Many times what he had made was inedible but it has helped him as now he cooks for himself quite happily. I too love the cooking method of chucking everything in but my kids seem to be have more discerning tastes than I had and refuse to eat it. Both myself and my brother had to eat many a concotion!
  4. Being ill doesn't have to make you unhappy - for most of my life my mum had rheumatoid arthritis quite badly in her hands and feet. Although she used to be in pain, it would never stop her from doing things with us and she used to take the pee out of herself by saying she was waddling again. Even when the cancer struck her humour kept up and even right at the end she was still her sarcastic self!
  5. Be yourself - this I think is the most important lesson both my parents taught me. You must be your own person. This is probably where my independece comes from!
I hope that my children learn many things from me and Neb but that they also learn from their enviroment, friends and other members of their family!

Long car journeys

Friday is nearing and so is the thought of keeping the kids entertained in the car for 4 hours, whilst also map reading (we don't have a Satnav in our house - we swore at the last one we borrowed and Neb is unsure if our cigarette lighter works so it wouldn't charge!). I've also just read that young children are OK in the car for 30 minutes and then they get restless!!

Car is now at that age where she will not fall asleep in the car, which to be fair is a bit of a bugger! It means that we have to think of ways to keep them enterained without leading to any wars, or an annoyed me! So, after a sweep of the internet, twitter, google and my brain - I have these ideas.

  • My House - game I've mentioned before but not going to work on motorway!
  • Car colour bingo -The girls get to pick a colour car (we try and not let Car pick purple! ) and first to 10 wins.
  • I spy - something which can only go on for so long - seeing as Car has not quite to grips with which letter starts which word
  • Singing
  • Food - this will keep both quiet for a while and I may even resort to bribery with sweets!
But then I realised these ideas are all great, but I need something which they can do themselves so I can also concentrate on the map reading (yes by holding the map upside down, I am a woman you know!). So, any or all ideas would be appreciated

K and Co - REVIEW

As I mentioned last week, I live in tshirts and combats, so I was very happy when I got the opportunity to review some clothes for K and Co. K and Co is the amalgamation of 3 catalogues Kays, Great Universal and Empire Stores. Now, I remember my mum having a Kays catalogue so I was intrigued to see how the new brand has development.

And what can I say, well I was very pleased - especially being a larger lady - I get very disheartened going into shops and finding clothes in a size 6, or even clothes that only stock up to a size 16. Well, K and Co , stock sizes from 6 -32,as well as petite and tall options.

So, what did I pick, well I went for the Long Sleeve Tunic:

and the fit is lovely, I got two colours grey and khaki and the material is so soft.
The tunic is currently on sale for £5 and is part of the 3 for 2 offer. You can even spread the cost of buying any item by opening a K account (subject to status)

The other item, that I got was the combat trousers (yes predictable I know!). Again, the fabric of the trousers was soft and I was surprised at the fit ( I do find it difficult to find trousers that fit properly, due to my long legs, fat tummy and large hip situation!) but these well these fit perfectly!

The trousers sell for £28.00 but again you can spread the cost, and if you spend over £100 online you can also buy now pay later at the K & Co shop (ideal for those big purchases, Christmas time or just spoiling yourself!)

So, would I shop on K and Co again, yes I think I would. The site is well laid out and when your bored of shopping, you can also stop, have a coffee and read, do some puzzles and then go back to the shopping!

BNM

I was given the opportunity to review the clothes for free. All opinions given in the post are mine.
All images used in the post are from the K and Co website.

Holiday Hitler

So, I'm on holiday and so far we've had adventures by the sea and then a home day.

Today, Monday - dependant on weather, I hope to go somewhere for a walk, beach, or even rock pool day.  Then Tuesday again another day out, Wednesday we'll probaly stay local and Thursday will be last minute bits and a day of packing.
And then of course, when we go off on Friday to the cottage. And I've kinda looked into places to go, things to see. I may have been doing this since the holiday got booked. I've been on the web, asking on twitter, asking friends - I love doing it. But, I can't plan what we're doing every day because Neb says that's wrong and we need to relax and go with flow, but I want to see so much, want to see it all (which to be honest I'm probaly not going to do in a week!)

I will of course also be taking a note book and noting everything we've done - and then I can label pictures correctly, and of course tell you all about it!!

Best get off to plan other things to annoy do with the family!!

Check out the new thing!

I have done some 'alterations' to the blog, and as I'm not a techie I'm quite proud especially as I did think I'd broken it at one point!

So what have I done, well let me see if you can spot it?

dum, de dum , de dum, dum ,dum , de, de  ( yes this is me humming a la incidental music while you find it!)

Found it yet, no, well I've added a favicon! No, I have no idea what the word means hang on .... (goes off to google it .) Aah, hang on ....

Definition for favicon:
A favicon (short for favorites icon), also known as a shortcut icon, website icon, URL icon, or bookmark icon is a 16×16 or 32×32 pixel square icon associated with a particular website or webpage. ....
So, while on twitter the other day, a Canadian blogger who I follow posted that she had added her favicon (or in her words " a thingie on the top of the thingies" and I thought ooo I want that.

So off I went to design one (Yes it says BNM) and following the information went and put it on.
(ahem, this took a bit longer than first thought because I didn't understand what this meant - Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure that all XML elements are closed properly. XML error message: Open quote is expected for attribute "{1}" associated with an element type "href".- well do you, anyway after my call for help, I fiddled some more - good techie way that fiddling and now it works!!)

So, big thanks to The Animated Woman who inspired me to follow suit (ooh and for making me laugh with the fandabidozi cartoons!)

Broody Bunny

Its not  me, honestly two is definitely enough and sometime I would like not to have flabby tummy and people ask me if I'm expecting!

This is the problem:
An angora kitten (or baby bunny wabbit!)

Yes, go on get it over with - ah wat a cutsey fluffy bunny wabbit, coochie coo!

And that is what Neb (my other half, just in case your new here) thinks. And he wants one. And my neighbour is giving them away - or she will to him!

Now come on really, do I really need something else to care for, yes its cute and fluffy and aww but NO.

We have two cats (who tend to just be there for feeding and taking over the children's beds and trying to snuggle you on hot days)and a very noise female guinea pig. So, we don't need another one.

But I think he is broody as hell! So do I give in, let him get the ittle wabbit!

Ideas - and not for rabbit recipes either!!

Feel Good Friday 2

Last week, I had the first feel good friday because it was sunny and life was good.
This week, I bring you feel good friday 2, because it is the start of my holidays. The children may have been off school for a week and now I am going to be off with them for 2 weeks. In a weeks time, we will be packed and on the way to our cottage holiday. But until then, I will be having some time with the girls. I have my fingers crossed that the weather will be good, but if not we plan to do rain walking and splashing fun!

So, how can I share with you the  good feeling. Well after the songs last week, I thought I'd share with you another bonus from my ipod - the podcasts.

Now, I tend to listen to podcasts in bed! Or when Neb has the snooker on and its boring!!

And the podcasts I listen to are:

These two fabulous comedians are laugh a loud funny. So funny, that I must remember not to listen to them when my bladder is full! (Yes, I know TMI!)

I've managed to find you a clip from YouTube - but there is swearing in it!

(note though, I am better at Maths than Phil!

And the other Podcast is Rhod Gilbert's Best Bits. Rhod presents a show on BBC Radio Wales on a Saturday afternoon and the podcast is the best bits - the bits without the music.

And another clip for you:

So, happy Friday everyone!!

Tomboy or Princess?

I'd like to point out something to you all.
I don't do handbags, make up, heels or fashion.
  • Once upon a time, I did make up, but I was young at uni and it only consisted of a bit of lippy and some mascara, I even did eyelash curlers!
  • I don't do heels because I'm 5ft11 and too damned tall as it is! Handbags, I have two and maybe a couple of shoulder bags!
  • And fashion, well I tend to do slummy Mummy wear - you know combats, jeans, maybe a couple of denim skirts, some tshirts!

So, the other day, while on Google+ (you know that the new thing that's not facebook and has more words than Twitter, that some of you are on, and I'm on there as other real me!)   I was talking to Claire about her chavy choice of handbag and I mentioned that I had two. She nearly popped a cork.  And then, it got me thinking, ( bad idea, thinking you know), will the fact that I am not a girly girl influence my kids.

Will they be Tomboys or Princesses?

Will they be like Suri Cruise, wearing make up, heels and  being a fashionista? I think not!

Or will they be tree climbing, adventure going girls. I think so.

But to be honest, whatever they are, they will always be healthy. They may wear skirts or trousers or run around bare and naked but they will always be my two little girls, my princesses, my bananas!

Cup of Char anyone? (and COMPETITION)

It's mid July, cold and windy as usual. The kids have come in from playing outside and are asking if they can have a drink.
What do they ask for - its not juice, its not milkshake, no, my kids will demand ask nicely for a nice cup of tea! Yes, my kids love tea ! Car will run around going  " More Tea Vicar", until you refill her cup!

We love tea in our house, and the kids have drunk tea since they were old enough to drink out of a cup (Note, I'm not one of those mummy's who give their child tea in a bottle!). They love it and have their own teacups!

So, you can imagine how happy we all were to review some tea for the London Tea Company. The company, which was set up by two brothers, make luxurious teas which are 100% Organic and Fairtrade.

We were sent the following teas to try:

Firstly the Earl Grey and Vanilla Chai came in wonderful cylindrical packaging and even though the girls didn't like the taste of them , they loved smelling the tubes.

My husband (whose favourite is Earl Grey) stated that it was the best he had ever had. The teabags give off the lovely smell of  bergamot from the tube and when you add water, the smell given off enriches the air.

I decided to try the Vanilla Chai. I had never had a Chai tea before and oh my-  It was gorgeous, the aroma again filled the house and it felt like the cup was giving you a warming cuddle. The husband was surprised that I liked it as it is full of the spices that I would normally hate but this one tickled my fancy a lot.

The last tea, which we drank, came from the Gourmet Tea Range and is the Red Berries tea.

This tea has been created to be an indulgence and that it is. I'm normally quite a sceptic on fruit teas (as most I've tasted before taste of dishwater), but not this one, you can again smell and taste the fruit. I did try persuading the kids to taste it but unfortunately I don't think they agreed with me as to its taste!

COMPETITION TIME

Now,seeing as the weather is basically like its the middle of Autumn (and not Summer) how would you like to win yourself some tea? I have been given a collection box to give away:

Belated another year older

I was another year older last week and I forgot to write anything (duh!) but as the drought in Eastern Africa is currently on my mind I thought I'd post this.

It was the summer of 1985, a day before my birthday, a Saturday. I was turning 9 the day after! And what a party I had - BBQ in full swing, speakers out on the lawn and why well because this was on:

It is sad to think that 26 years on and the state of affairs in Africa hasn't changed and that some parts of the country are still suffering from drought and malnutrition. Remember to help those in need and donate to UNICEF's East Africa Children's Crisis Appeal

Summer is here.... HAHA

So, apparently its Summer - yeah right!

The girls are both now on their Summer Holidays and I can imagine that at home they are going stir crazy! The weather is awful - the wind and the rain that is lashing at the window here in work and it feels more like a winters day than midsummer.

Walking through town on lunchtime there were people huddled under umbrellas, children bundled in raincoats miserably being dragged through the streets. I walked into one local shop and it was full with parents who seemed to have had enough already.

I'm crossing my fingers that this weather does not continue, we are off on holiday a week on Friday and are hoping for some fine weather (which may or may not arrive if you check here!)

If your kids are going stir crazy but you have found a way to keep them happy please let me know!

The rain does hide the tears that I cried for the Children in East Africa over the weekend.

Sea Band - Review and Giveaway

So its the start of the holidays, you are going on a long drive and your child suffers from travel sickness. Do you:

a) make sure there is a receptacle for catching sick in ( be it their lunchbox, a plastic bag etc)
b) don't overfeed child and keep fingers crossed that sickness will not develop
c) have a staycation for the entire holidays!

Any ideas, well let me set the scene for you, a family of four is on a ferry. The dad tells both kids that they shouldn't feel sick because its not the same as being on a rowboat - its bigger and there are stabilisers*.  Both children try and walk around. Child 1, realised that this is not a good thing and rushes to the nearest toilet. This continues for several holidays, many remedies are tried from eating dried bread (it'll settle your stomach, they said), to holding a penny in the hand and nothing worked. The mother then found Sea-Band and the child was cured.

The Child in question was me, and even though I'm a great in cars, I hate sea travel of any kinds, unless that is I'm wearing a Sea-Band.

The Sea- Band comes in adult and child sizes:

Sea-Bands provide natural, drug-free nausea relief by applying pressure to the Nei Kuan acupressure points on each wrist by means of a small plastic stud.  Sea-Band not only work on motion sickness, but also has been clinically tested against nausea in pregnancy too.

COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED

I have two sets of Sea-Band's to giveaway (One Grey, One Blue; One Grey, One Khaki) and if you would like to be win a set, then please leave a comment below.

The winner will be drawn by random from the correct answers. The prize winner will be contacted by myself and the prize will be sent out directly from me.. No cash alternative will be offered. The prize will be sent within 28 days. If the prize winner cannot be contacted within 3 days then a redraw will take place. This competition will end at midday on 21stJuly 2011. This competition is open to UK residents 18 years and over only

GOOD LUCK

Feel Good Friday

So, its the first day of the school holidays (yes for some reason here they think that giving the kids 7 weeks off is a good idea), and your stuck in work (insert evil laugh - possibly not stuck more in work safe from the kids) and its a lovely day outside (blue sky, lovely and warm!) . You've also walked in (car in garage having its MOT) listening to the tunes you bought for your ipod yesterday (I Gleeked out!) and your feeling bright and breezy (well kinda, haven't really done too much real work yet!).

To share with you this feeling, here are some other things to make you feel good today:

The Monkey and the Mouse webcomic posted a new strip yesterday - love it!

Insomniac Mummy has resurrected Hot or Not, go check it out to see whether you agree with her.

And here is some Glee tunes for you all:

Have a great Friday - off to do some work!

Tractors (said in a country voice)

There is apparently nothing I won't do for my friends. I have got drunk with them, shared stories with them and now turned into a tractor papparazzi for them.
This week I have stood on the promenade outside my offices and taken these pictures for a dear friend's son. I have mentioned Wi on here before and I've been friends with her since school. Her husband's father used to own a tractor store (you know like a garage except selling Tractors and not car's) and her son (taking after his father, I hope!) has a thing for tractors. So, there we were eating our lunch, looking at the sea (with our fingers crossed that someone would fall on their behinds on the rocks - we're nice like that!) and along came this.

So just for you (Wi) and boy, here are some more. I think the last one is very special! I've also added a tractor song for you to listen to!

Vacuum for you....

It's been 151 years since the first vacuum cleaner was invented, in Iowa by a man. Yes, surprisingly men have been inventing and changing the vacuum cleaner ever since, normally for their wives to use!

Since then you can get many different kinds be they upright or cylinder, bagged or bagless.  The man, (in my house at least) only vacuums when his mum is on her way round! (the picture below isn't him!)

New Vacuum cleaner

It can be said that both the girls in our house hate the noise of the vacuum (something to do with me not using it enough) and only now will Car actually sit there without her hands over her ears.

But if you are a vacuumer (yes I have made a word up) where would you get your accessories and products from? The best place in my opinion is Vacuum world, where you can get items from Miele Vacuum Bags to spare parts (always good in our house to have a spare vacuum belt or two as my hair tends to break it!), to cleaning accessories.

The company, based in Northumberland, guarantees to get “Any vacuum cleaner parts, bags and accessories you need direct to your door in 24hrs*". They  aim to stock every bag for every vacuum ever made. However if you find that they haven't got what you want then they will try their utmost to source it for you.

So what you waiting for, go out there and vacuum. Maybe we can make it an Olympic sport?

A new country is born

Yesterday, the last shuttle was sent up from NASA and today a new country was born.
South Sudan, the 193rd country in the world, has begun. Their freedom day has dawned - now let us hope they can know peace.
AGOK, SOUTHERN SUDAN-MARCH, 2011: Returnees camp in AGOK. Photo by Veronique de
Viguerie/Reportage by Getty Images for UNICEF

Half the population of this new nation will be children, but they will need our help.
As Anthony Lake, UNICEF Executive Director stated .."the children of South Sudan face significant challenges, One child in nine still dies before reaching the age of five. Hundreds of thousands are deprived of their right to an education, to adequate health care..."

I find it sad, that one country can send rockets into space whilst in our newest country a 15 year old girl has more chance of dying in childbirth than she does of completing school. How is this fair, how can we stand back and let this happen.

Luckily, UNICEF is there and are working hard to increase maternal and child survival. By equipping health facilities, training health workers, immunising children, their work will help. They are in a great position as they have operated in Sudan for almost 60 years. They  have been present in the country throughout decades of conflict.

UNICEF ambassador Martin Bell visited the country in April and yesterday he spoke at an UNICEF round table on South Sudan stating that "...by almost every indication, South Sudan is going to be one of the poorest countries in the world, this country will need more than flags and anthems this weekend."

NZARA COUNTY, SOUTHERN SUDAN-MARCH, 2011: UNICEF Ambassador Martin Bell speaks to

attacks . Samuel has 2 wives and 14 children who fled with him. Photo by Veronique de Viguerie/

  • £5 could vaccinate 13 children against measles
  • £6.50 is enough to provide special milk for a severely malnourished child for a week
  • £40 could buy a school-in-a-bag of essential school supplies for 40 children and a teacher

Children of South Sudan urgently need our help now. To support UNICEF’s child survival projects in South Sudan text ‘SUDAN’ to 70007 or go to www.unicef.org.uk/southsudanappeal

Please help them , I know I will be.

A million and one

I have nearly a million and one other posts to write but I thought I'd share with you what has made me smile.

Being nosy, I have just checked my stat counter to see recent keyword searches and to see if being on the Netmums Parent Blogger network has helped (hello, if your from over there - stay, look around, yes I am always this mad!)

I like driving naked - except they got this, I'm sorry that it obviously wasn't what you want

Then there is the Aspidistra searches,  and all you got was a birthday wish and the story about me and my knickers.

There is also the other random person in Switzerland (yes, my stat counter can tell me where they're from!), who wanted to know if brushing her teeth naked happened in this house, unluckily they got some flashing toothbrushes instead.

And for the questions a Welsh person would ask - the answer is really, it was that big!!

Right, I'm off to catch up with some gossip, watch TV and have some wine.

My House

Not really My House - that looks like a bomb has gone off, and the gardens, well lest said better, unless you know how to strim!

With the Summer Holidays, fast approaching (Bel finishes school a week today -eek!), I thought I'd share with you a game we play on car journeys. Its a game, that came from me and Neb and now the girls have joined in.

When your driving down a road and see a house that you wish you could live in - something like these:

Houses in Bournville estate, Birmingham, UK

Monreith House - Country House Restoration

Packwood House, 2 Warwickshire,UK.

the first one to shout My House gets it!

PS If any of you own one of these houses - fancy a swap with a lovely 1970's council house! I'll throw the rubbish in for free!!

Apology and Revelation

Firstly, I'd like to apologise to Polly

When I wrote my post the other day I  putdown that Australian's wear this:
I was wrong. Its obvious to me that you don't (unless of course your a swagman in disguise)

SORRY

And the revelation - well it seems that Rupert Murdoch has listened to little old me, because earlier I tweeted this:

less than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply
(it was 4 hours ago - but I can't find the right Twitter Paste tool (all suggestions welcome).

And it seems that from Sunday #notw or News of the World to others are closing. For the best, I think, before they go back on themselves again and do something else that makes us all go WHATTTT!
